I would definitely recommend them to a friend.

Poor project management resulting in unfinished project items and rework and additional costs.

We have recommended HomeMasons to several people and also via social media.
Clean - HomeMasons final job EVERY day was to clean the job site.
Safe - HomeMasons was very safety conscious for themselves and for us.
Communication - HomeMasons communications was continuous, from the owner, Mason Hearn, to the office manager, Amy Boschen, and to the artisans. We knew what was planned and when people would arrive each day. And we were notified if there was a change caused by unforeseen circumstances.
Quality Of Materials - HomeMasons provided options and recommendations so that we could select the materials. And HomeMasons never tried to "up sell" us.
Quality Of Workmanship - We are MORE than satisfied with the quality of the workmanship, we are ESCTATIC! When guests first see our home additions, the first comment is almost always "WOW". Our "Irish bar" with 3 televisions and in wall linear fireplace and our sunroom with the bookshelf and the stone fireplace at https://homemasons.wpenginepowered.com/portfolio-item/living-spaces/ are examples of the quality you can expect from HomeMasons. Additionally, HomeMasons transformed our original screened in porch into the carpeted four-season room with 2 celling fans at https://homemasons.wpenginepowered.com/portfolio-item/porches-decks/.
Professional & Organized - Mason Hearn KNOWS what he is doing and takes pride in his company's work. At https://homemasons.wpenginepowered.com/our-story/ and https://homemasons.com/meet-the-founder/ you will see some of the positions Mason has held and some of the awards and accolades he and his company have earned.
Schedule - We had no schedule because HomeMasons had to repair our first inept contractor's mistakes and omissions during covid. HomeMasons came to our rescue after we fired our first contractor who subsequently lost his construction license.
Value - We did not receive fair value for our money ... we received GREAT value for our money.
Recognized Excellence - First and foremost, we recognize the company owner, Mason Hearn. His professionalism, honesty, vision, attention to detail, and patience are noteworthy. Furthermore, he is truly a "nice guy." Next is Kevin Hextall. Kevin is much more than a carpenter or handyman. He is an artisan. He takes great pride in EVERYTHING he does. We were very fortunate to have Kevin do much of the work in our home additions. Another talented person is Rafal Kuczynski who came onboard near the end of our project. Finally, we must recognize HomeMasons' office manager, Amy Boschen. She patiently answered any questions with regards to the detailed monthly invoices and was an integral part of the communications with the company.
Areas For Improvement - NONE!
Areas Of Satisfaction - HomeMasons exceeded our expectations in every area.
Additional Comments - We CANNOT be more pleased! You cannot go wrong with HomeMasons.
It took some time but HomeMason worked with us to come up with a design that transformed our bathroom into the spa like space we envisioned. The finished product was jaw dropping beautiful!

Recognized Excellence - Rafal, Scott
Areas For Improvement - Project took very long as we were lost in the shuffle with Julian.
Areas Of Satisfaction - Quality of work was great and all the people who did the work were professional and conscientious.
Home Masons impressed me with their honest, fair estimate and attention to detail in their work. They understood my needs and communicated effectively throughout the process. It was one of the least painful renovations projects I have completed thanks to them!
Recognized Excellence - Our lead carpenter Kevin was consistent and excellent.
Areas Of Satisfaction - HomeMasons understood the project and really heard me in terms of HOW I wanted the job done. With lots of kids in the house, we needed minimal interior impact until the last possible moment in the job and they achieved that for me. There was excellent attention to detail and reassurance that if ever they needed to come back to address something, they would be happy to do so.
I would definitely highly recommend HomeMasons
Recognized Excellence - Everyone was great. It’s been 6 months since the guys were here and I sadly can’t remember everyone’s name but Scott and Stephen were wonderful in addition to the tile guy whose name I am embarrassed to say I can’t remember.

I would greatly caution anyone from using HomeMasons. Starting in 11-2022 and running through 04-2023 we worked with HomeMasons to complete one project with two main pieces of work:
1. A trapdoor in our atrium for interior basement access.
2. Rough stairs for the aforementioned trapdoor.
We chose HomeMasons as they has previously completed an interior trapdoor on a house and Richmond and were able to coordinate us seeing it. They assured us this was a place of expertise for them.
The early stages of design and the planning process were seamless but as construction started, our initial 2-week estimate for work turned into 3 months of unending stress. This was a major pain point, and given the nature of the job as Time and Materials (T&M), this guaranteed that we were going to go well over the upper estimates they had provided us for the job ($11k-$16k), and resulted in me turning to another contractor to complete the project.
I have a wide variety of other things I didn't like:
- The work slowdown was caused by engineering failures that were negligent.
It's clear that HomeMasons had not planned adequately for our project. Given the T&M that became our problem. Over 2 iterations of their ideas they had only delivered a non-functioning trapdoor and a sizable hole in my wallet. For anyone that's engineering-minded here were the big mistakes:
1. First, they installed a 1/2-inch piano hinge (absolutely tiny and affixed to the hardwood floor itself). To be clear the role of this hinge is to bear about 100 lbs of weight. It started failing on the first use and caused splitting in our hardwood. There is 0% chance this was ever going to work, and given their expertise they should have known that.
2. Then they recommended a larger gauge piano hinge. We had this hinge installed as well and after ~2 months of little use it is also failing. This was another bad idea as it is also not long enough and is screwed into subflooring.
- Poor communication from the lead on my project
I always had to call to get updates, find out timetables, figure out when work would be done, etc. I'm told this was because my lead was bad and 2 months in he was fired and replaced with Mason Hearn (the owner), but he was not better. I was not notified my project lead had been changed until of course I called to find it out several days after the change.
- I have multiple instances of Mason/my lead misrepresenting things to me directly and refusing to take care of certain parts of the project.
For example, they increased the scope of work and charged me an extra ~$400 for parts (and what would have likely been $1,000 for labor) that I was neither notified of nor agreed to. When I asked Mason to have these parts returned to get a credit back to my account, he told me they were required to address comments on the permit inspection. This was untrue, and I called the permit inspector to confirm that the comment was not a required change.
- HomeMasons is a very expensive option. You will be paying $100/hr labor, $30/day travel per person, 130% of the parts cost (they charge you a 30% admin fee on parts). You will get an unintelligible invoice each week with payment due the next week. I was hoping to be provided receipts and timesheets. And as I've been describing above, they don't deliver quality results for that kind of price.
- Honestly, if you've gotten this far, I hope it's enough to persuade you to contact at least a few other contractors. I found working with HomeMasons exceedingly painful and not something I'd recommend to anyone else. I still haven't mentioned the hours of work I put into finding a trapdoor latch and metal coating (products/services that they confidently declared to me did not exist), being misquoted what I owe over the phone, and generally being treated disrespectfully and dismissively whenever I expressed my concerns, but sadly I'm hitting the character limit on this review.
I paid HomeMasons $14k for bad work and a contractor I like ~$2K to fix it. Learn from my mistake.
Value - The 35% administration fee is hard to swallow. It makes them very expensive.
Areas For Improvement - HomeMasons, Inc. did not fall short of my expectations.
Areas Of Satisfaction - They got the job done right.
Additional Comments - The 35% administration fee is hard to swallow.
