I really like the people at J&F and they were on time and the project looked good at first. We had the cabinets refaced. However, a year later, six of the cabinets or drawers that are under the sink or by the side of the sink have warped and have to be replaced. It is apparently water damage, but that did not happen with the former cabinets, and we have not done anything differently regarding how we wash/dry dishes. J&F have offered to do the labor for the replacements for free, and even though it has been several months since this request, I'm sure they are working on it. However, if I were to do it again, I would see about getting better quality refacing, or get better quality cabinets.

We recently enjoyed our first Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners in our new kitchen, and we couldn't be happier!

We had wanted to update our kitchen for several years, but were always a bit overwhelmed by the scope of the work that we wanted done. Our neighbor recommended J&F Specialties, who had done several jobs for her. We made an appointment with John to discuss what we wanted to do. The meeting went very well - John was a pleasure to work with, and we were very impressed with his ideas and recommendations. We decided on a complete kitchen renovation, to include removal of a load-bearing wall to open up our dining area. We also asked John to re-face a fireplace, replace a hearth, add built-in cabinets to our family room, and install hardwood floors throughout our downstairs living area.

During our project planning, John made numerous visits to walk us through the design of the kitchen, dining room, and living room renovations.

John's designer Kaki was awesome! She easily took our vague ideas of color and design and solidified them. The end result is a beautiful living space that is a pleasure to come home to every evening.

John was very accommodating of our add-ins and change orders. He helped us to incorporate an antique washstand into a bathroom vanity as part of the renovations. He also made arrangements to include a matching piece of granite that we used on top of an antique sideboard that we turned into a bar. Even when we made a major change in the middle of the kitchen renovation john handled it calmly and discussed various options to incorporate the change we wanted.

Throughout the project John made frequent progress checks, both to check out the quality of the work and to make sure we were happy with the work.

John's team was attentive and polite. If we happened to come home while they were working, they would always take the time to answer any of our questions and walk us through the work they were doing.

Despite the extent of the project, we were very comfortable with John and his team, and were confident that they would do a great job.

They helped us to add a two-story 900 square foot addition and new 350 square foot composite material deck to the back of our house, upgrade our HVAC and hot water heater, add a master bathroom with a custom walk-in shower, separate soaking tub, dual vanity sink, and compact washer/dryer, completely renovated our kitchen and added a breakfast area, renovated both existing bathrooms, and helped us finish a media room. J & F Specialties provided a good value but the experience was somewhat stressful because I felt like I needed to constantly monitor the subcontractors to head off problems. I also feel that J & F are good at installation but definitely are not the company for those that are looking for a lot of design guidance and help with selections. I was comfortable making all my selections. If you are the type that needs help coordinating all the many finishes that go into a kitchen you might want to go with a company that has a kitchen designer on staff. J & F does work with Mosaic Tile who have a huge showroom and can be very helpful with coordinating your tile with your cabinets & countertops. I would also caution clients that they should plan on adding probably 10-15% to whatever bid J & F gives you. This will go towards covering the price differential in what J & F puts in their proposal for tile allowance, hardware allowance etc and what you actually choose. You can certainly find tile and hardware in their allowance price range (example $3.00 each for hardware) but it will be pretty basic. I knew that going in what I chose would probably be more so it wasn't a shock. In the end I am very happy with how my kitchen turned out just couldn't give them 5 stars because the experience wasn't as smooth as I would like. I am happy to report that their follow up has been good. They came out a few weeks even after project completion and having received their final payment to adjust some cabinet sliders that were sticking a little once I re-loaded the cabinets.

Areas For Improvement - I felt that the subcontractors were not properly supervised and didn't always take the necessary precautions to preventpossible damage to existing floors, appliances etc. that weren't being changed. The floor tile contractor laid the new tile but didn't remove the baseboards before installing the new tile so the result was that the baseboards look too short and definitely can't have shoe molding added which would make them look even more out of proportion. There were also some tile mistakes with the backsplash that had to be corrected.
