Company History
In 1955, after studying at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and working as a designer and builder in Houston, Hubert Whitlock moved to Charlotte, NC and formed partnerships for commercial and speculative residential buildings. A perfectionist by nature, he discovered his own formula for providing high-quality custom home designs and home construction and renovation projects and formed Whitlock Builders in1957.
An artist who recognized a home as a work of art, Hubert Whitlock never cut corners and keenly perfected his craft. Quickly developing a reputation for high quality, uncompromising construction and outstanding integrity with his clients, subcontractors and vendors, the fruits of his artistic sensibilities and perfectionism grew, and the company he created flourished.
A devoted family man, Hubert Whitlock laid the foundation for quality in each of his four children. Brothers and sister, Scott, Stephanie and Steven made a home at their father’s business. Along with other talented individuals, they have helped grow and shape Whitlock Builders into Charlotte’s premiere home building and remodeling company.
While Scott and Steven Whitlock continue in leadership roles, Stephanie Whitlock Hazard retired in 2012. About her two-decades in the company and tenure as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Scott has this to say:
"Stephanie not only played a key role in building and implementing administrative policies and procedures, but she formed a highly competent, detail-oriented and friendly staff. Stephanie brought a sense of fun to the company culture by creating traditions such as annual holiday parties, special company events and the recognition of staff milestones. She developed long-term associations with key accounting and insurance associates. Stephanie kept Whitlock Builders on its chosen path of conservative fiscal management until her retirement."
With this tightly knit management team of family members who truly understand and appreciate their father's legacy of quality, the company has acquired tremendous success and a stellar reputation.
Over the years, the company has been awarded several high-profile renovations and construction projects for many prestigious clients. In fact, Whitlock Builders completed the elegant renewal and additions to the historic Morrocroft Mansion, originally built by Governor Cameron Morrison in 1927. The company also built the chancellor's home on the University at North Carolina at Charlotte campus. Whitlock Builders was chosen by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to dismantle, store and rebuild the historic home place of the association's namesake now a part of the Billy Graham Library and Visitor's Center.
With revenues comprised from quality custom home construction, remodeling and renovation projects and exterior remodeling, including landscaping, swimming pools and other exterior builds, the boundaries of Whitlock Builders' expertise are limitless. Projects currently include areas of Charlotte in Eastover, Myers Park, Morrocroft, Seven Eagles and the UNC Charlotte area, with regional projects stretching from Uwharrie Point, Lake Norman, Fort Mill and Union County. Overall the Whitlock team did a very nice job with our home. We had a favorable overall experience during planning and construction and that has continued until today. We were very pleased with the efforts of Richard Reif that served (and continues to serve) as our primary project manager. We are still working on a few items to complete, but for the most part, the home was finished with high quality and considerable care. I think building during COVID presented several challenges that the Whitlock team had to navigate - labor costs, labor delays, illnesses, supply chain issues with materials, etc... We do not fault Whitlock with those issues - more environmental. Taking a step back, we worked as a partnership through the process which is critical for mutual success in a home of this magnitude.

Additional Comments - I think they do an excellent job and Paul really keeps up with what’s going on -follows through on jobs they do for us even when we are t there and makes good and fixes all problems . I respect and admire Paul very much he has integrity and does what he says he’s going to . All the workers are very respectful . Nathan was great when he oversaw a job for us .

We have been extraordinarily pleased with the Whitlock experience. It all starts with the people. Scott, Steven, Tyler, Richard, Mark, Monty, Josh, and Heather have all been teammates that we have interacted with. Great people. Great attention to detail. Great focus to get things done in a prudent and cost effective manner. People make all the difference. They have a great team. You can also see this in the interaction with the sub contractors. We have been so pleased with progress to-date.

Schedule - So far things have gone very well. It is a large project and there are new challenges in 2020 with the COVID environment, but they have been able to successfully keep the project moving ahead.

Construction Quality - Very pleased with the work. Excellent relationships with sub contractors also give us confidence the job will be done incredibly well.

Communication - Detailed weekly communications including in depth photos. Also, nice explanations surrounding change events. Also coordination with outside vendors has been great (plumbing, appliances, decorator, audio-video, etc...)

Problem Resolution - There have not been any problems to-date. I have no concerns about resolution if matters arise. They are very client focused.
Clean & Safe
Clean & Safe - I have not seen a job site so focused on safety. Very impressive. The job site is kept neat, clean, and detailed specs throughout. The cleanliness is important as I have severe allergies.
Employees & Subcontractors
Employees & Subcontractors - Great people all around. This extends to the subcontractors. We feel very confident in all the trades.
Value
Value - Whitlock may charge a premium, but you get a premium product. There is tremendous value in what they do and how they operate.

Also, Whitlock helped address some needs at our temporary house - they were great and helped bring peace of mind to our family. Thank you all very much. Additional Comments - Overall, I would give Whitlock five stars. Because of a mid-job employee change, some issues did develop, but they handled them professionally. Having done several renovations, I know that problems are part of the process, so did not lower their overall rating. They do want to exceed expectations and will do what they can to right any issues.
