Very bad experience during bathroom remodel, we had to stop work and everything had to be torn out and redone, details and specifics are below. We also paid in advance on the contract items so Brian Gorton could pay his guys and purchase materials. After he had to stop work Brian kept the balance that we had paid him and never refunded us the amount due back to us. He also refuses to honor the warranty for the work that was completed, we have to rip out a wall to reset plumbing valves that were not set correctly. He refuses to return any email, texts, or phone calls.
Selected examples of their work:
Shower pan- They incorrectly set the shower pan liner so it was flat on the floor, it's supposed to be sloped on a bed of mortar. After the shower pan liner is sloped then the final bed of mortar is placed on top of that. Also the shower pan that the tile was supposed to be placed on was poured flat and also dipped to a low point against the wall so water would not have even drained. All of this had to be torn out and redone.
Electrical- We paid to have a licensed electrician do some of the re-wiring but Brian did the electrical work himself and we lost power to that circuit. After about 2 weeks of Brian trying to trouble shoot he finally talked to an experienced and licensed electrician who advised him the GFCI needed to be reset.
Heated Floor- Brian and his crew did not follow the directions for how to install the heated floor. They spaced the wires too far apart which would have not allowed the floor to heat evenly. Luckily we asked to inspect the wiring before they tiled over it so we could make sure it was installed correctly. When we questioned him about it he said it should be fine but the manufacturers directions clearly stated in bold lettering not to install it the way they had installed it. Instead of Brian correcting the issue with his crew he told us to talk to them directly and it was not well received by the crew creating an awkward situation.
Material usage- We paid for new materials to be used on our project but instead they used old materials for our sub floor that appear to have been staged outside and were quite weathered. When we saw the materials I inquired specifically about not using old compromised materials but I had went on a business trip and they installed anyways.
Backerboard install- When they installed the backer board they used silicone sealant on all the seams and spread it around the backboard instead of using mesh tape and mortar which is the proper way to install. The tile would not have stuck to the silicone or would have fallen off shortly after the install. The silicone seams would also trap water behind the tile creating further water damage issues down the road. Everything had to be torn out.
Chrome trim throughout the bathroom- We specified all the metal tile trim throughout the bathroom be chrome to match the fixtures. They installed a different finish and when we asked them about it they said they didn't have chrome in stock so they just picked something else.
Tile layout- they did start some tile install before we finally had them stop work. The tile was wavy on the wall and not a consistent flat surface, some corners dipped in, others looked like they were popping out.
Vapor barrier- installed vapor barrier for the insulation wrong, they placed the vapor barrier against the outside wall instead of on the wall facing the inside. We caught this and were able to have them correct it but it would have led to moisture issues and eventually rotting the outside sheathing.
Shower diverter valve- installer did not read the instructions to make sure shower valve was set at the right offset within the wall, it was set too far back and the shower trim kit cannot be installed. Wall behind the shower needs to be ripped out, the valve cut out, reset at the correct distance and wall repaired. We tried to contact Brian for a warranty repair but he will not respond.
I could keep going but there is a space limit on the review.
Experience was very upsetting and a huge mess, I would look elsewhere.
